What is the Human Aura? Here's a question that might stop you mid-scroll - what if you're not just a physical body walking around in a world of solid things? What if you're actually surrounded - right now, as you read this - by a living, breathing, luminous field of energy that reflects everything you feel, think, and experience? That field has a name... we call it the "human aura"... and once you understand what it is and what it does, you'll never quite look at yourself - or anyone else - the same way again.
The first step to understanding the aura is to know that all living things i.e. plants, animals as well as humans - you - are made up of a complex combination of atoms, molecules and energy cells which generate a large magnetic energy field that can be sensed, felt and even seen.
This magnetic energy field is what is commonly referred to as your aura, think of it as your own personal energy field.
The human aura is the energy field that surrounds and interpenetrates your physical body. Think of it like a cocoon of living light - layered, colorful, constantly shifting, and deeply personal. Every living thing has one. Your cat has one. That old oak tree in the garden has one. But the human aura is especially rich and complex, because it carries the full spectrum of who you are: your physical health, your emotions, your thoughts, your memories, and even your spiritual essence. It's not magic in the fairy-tale sense - it's energy, and energy is very, very real.
Now, you might be thinking, "This sounds fascinating… but also a little out there." And honestly? That's a completely fair reaction. Most of us grew up learning that what we can see and touch is what's real. But science has long confirmed that everything - including your body - is made of energy vibrating at different frequencies. The aura is simply the part of your energy field that extends beyond your skin. It's measurable, it's observable, and thousands of healers, researchers, and sensitive individuals have studied it for centuries. You're in good company here.
So what does the human aura actually look like?
Picture yourself standing in a soft, glowing bubble of light. That bubble isn't uniform - it has distinct layers, each one sitting slightly further from your body than the last, like the layers of an onion, except infinitely more beautiful. Each layer has its own texture, color, and function. Some layers feel dense and close to the skin. Others feel expansive and gossamer-thin, reaching out several feet in every direction. Together, they form what energy healers call the "auric field" - your personal energy signature.
Most of us have a fairly clear understanding of our physical anatomy but we lack sufficient knowledge of the bigger picture, the energy body or energetic anatomy, which includes:
The aura typically extends anywhere from a few inches to several feet around the body, depending on your health, your mood, and your level of awareness. When you feel vibrant, confident, and well-rested, your aura expands and brightens - it literally puffs up like a proud peacock. When you feel depleted, anxious, or unwell, it contracts and dims, pulling in close to the body like a turtle retreating into its shell. This is why certain people walk into a room and you "feel" them before they even speak - their aura is large, bright, and full of life-force energy.
Healers and clairvoyants who can perceive the aura often describe it as shimmering, translucent light - sometimes soft and misty, sometimes vivid and electric. It moves. It pulses. It responds to your thoughts and feelings in real time. Imagine watching the Northern Lights, but wrapped around a person - that swirling, shifting, layered quality of light is the closest visual metaphor most aura readers reach for. And while not everyone sees it with their physical eyes straight away, many people sense it - as warmth, as a tingling, as an intuitive knowing that something is "there".
When you ask wat is the human aura it's here where things get really interesting. The aura isn't just one thing - it's made up of what we call "subtle energy bodies", and most traditional energy healing systems recognise at least four primary ones. Think of these as four different "you's" that all exist at the same time, each one vibrating at a slightly higher frequency than the last. They overlap, they interact, and they influence each other constantly - which is why what happens in your emotional world eventually shows up in your physical body, and vice versa.
The first is the "Etheric Body" - the layer closest to your physical body and it carries your life-force energy that keeps your cells humming. This is the layer most directly connected to your health and physical wellbeing.
Next comes the "Emotional Body" - the layer that holds your feelings, your moods, your emotional memories, and your reactions to the world. This layer shifts rapidly - lighting up with joy, darkening with grief, swirling with anxiety, or glowing with love. Energy healers pay close attention to this layer when addressing stress, anxiety, and emotional imbalance.
The third layer is the "Mental Body" - the layer that carries your thoughts, beliefs, mental patterns, and intellectual energy. It's the layer that connects most directly to personal development and growth.
The fourth is the "Spiritual Body" (sometimes called the Astral Body or Causal Body, depending on the tradition you study). This is the outermost layer, the most expansive, and the most subtle. It holds your soul's journey
What is the human aura? Please take note that because of the diverse ways that the auric field is perceived and sensed all my comments and remarks about the auric layers are based on general agreement as well as my own experience but are by no means the absolute rule.
Many energy healing traditions expand the four subtle bodies into "seven distinct auric layers", each one corresponding to a different aspect of your being and aligning with the seven main chakras (energy centres) in the body. The four bodies we just explored form the foundation, and the additional layers...
...extend the field further into spiritual and transpersonal dimensions. You don't need to memorise all seven right now. What matters is understanding that your aura is a rich, multi-dimensional system - not a simple glow, but a complex, intelligent energy field that tells the full story of who you are.
Some of these layers follow the contours of your body while others form the shape of an oval or egg.
When I talk about the what is the human aura and the aura layers, the word layer might suggest that there is separation or isolation between them.
This is a misconception as each layer interpenetrates and interrelates with the others beginning at the center of your being.
When you look at these layers going from the inside (etheric or 1st layer) out (ketheric template or 7th layer) the vibration of each level becomes finer and higher.
Each layer of the aura communicates with the others and each layer is also related to the chakra of the same number.
The aura layers all communicate with your physical body through the chakra system - those spinning wheels of energy that run along the centre of your body from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. Think of the chakras as the junction boxes and the aura as the electrical field they generate. When your chakras are balanced and flowing freely, your aura is bright, full, and coherent. When a chakra is blocked or overactive, that disruption ripples outward into the corresponding auric layer - and eventually, if left unaddressed, into your physical experience. This is the foundation of energy healing.
These energies make you what and who you are and in turn, are affected by your surroundings and life style. They reflect your health, character, mental activity and emotional state.
Your energy level and the way you use any particular part of yourself also greatly influences the size of your aura.
It is generally believed that your energy field emits out from the body approximately 60 centimeters (2 feet) to 90 centimeters (3 feet) on all sides. It extends above your head and below your feet into the ground.
If you suffer from stress, have experienced trauma and emotional pain, it can show as distortions and blocks in your magnetic energy field long before they manifest as dis-ease in the physical plane, your body.
Your whole energy system could uncover important resources that would enrich your life with new insight, growth and power.
A special type of photography called Kirlian photography has even been able to capture the aura on film.
Now that you've asked what is the human aura? What exactly is "aura healing"?
Simply put, it's the practice of identifying and clearing disruptions, blockages, tears, or imbalances in the auric field - and then restoring it to a state of coherence, flow, and vitality. Aura healing practitioners use a variety of techniques, including hands-on energy work, visualisation, sound, colour therapy, crystals, breathwork, and intention-setting. The goal is always the same... to bring the energy field back into balance so that the whole person - body, mind, emotion, and spirit - can heal and thrive. It's gentle, it's non-invasive, and it works beautifully alongside conventional healthcare.
You might need aura healing if you've been feeling persistently drained, emotionally stuck, anxious without an obvious cause, or physically unwell despite a clean bill of health. You might seek it out after a difficult relationship, a period of intense stress, a loss, or a major life transition. Many people also use regular aura maintenance - much like going to the gym or eating well - simply to stay energetically healthy, clear, and vibrant. Think of it as a deep clean for your invisible self. And just like your house feels lighter and brighter after a good clean, so do "you" after an aura healing session.
"How do I see the aura?" - this is one of the most common questions beginners ask after asking what is the human aura, and the good news is that aura perception is a skill you can develop. Most people don't see it dramatically at first - no sudden visions of blazing color (though that does happen for some). More often, it starts as a soft, subtle awareness: a slight shimmer at the edge of someone's body, a faint haze of color around their head, or a strong intuitive sense of their energy. Your peripheral vision is actually more sensitive to subtle energy than your direct gaze, so many aura-seeing practices begin by softening your focus and looking "around" a person rather than directly at them.
A simple practice to try right now... hold your hand up against a plain white or light-coloured wall, relax your eyes so they go slightly soft and unfocused, and gaze at the space just beyond your fingertips. Don't stare hard — let your eyes go dreamy. After a minute or two, many people notice a faint, whitish or slightly colored haze around their fingers. That's your etheric body - the first layer of your aura - saying hello. It's subtle at first, and that's perfectly normal. With practice, patience, and the right guidance, your ability to perceive the aura deepens beautifully over time.
One of the most captivating aspects of the question "what is the human aura and what does it look like" is the extraordinary role that "color" plays in the auric field. Each color that appears in the aura carries specific meaning - it tells a story about your current state of health, your emotional landscape, your dominant thoughts, and your spiritual development. Aura colors aren't fixed - they shift and change as you grow, heal, and evolve. Think of your aura as a living mood ring, except infinitely more nuanced and far more informative.
Here's a quick guide to some of the most common aura colors and what they generally indicate:
Keep in mind that no single color is "bad" - every color has a healthy expression and an imbalanced one. A bright, clear red speaks of vitality and passion. A dark, muddy red might indicate suppressed anger or physical depletion. Context matters enormously in aura reading, and a skilled aura reader looks at the whole field - the colors, the layers, the density, the movement - before drawing any conclusions. Learning to read the aura is a rich, nuanced skill, and it deepens beautifully with study and practice.
You might be wondering: can we actually *photograph* the aura? The answer is a fascinating yes - at least in part. "Kirlian photography", developed by Soviet researchers Semyon and Valentina Kirlian in 1939, captures the electromagnetic field around living objects by placing them on a photographic plate connected to a high-voltage electrical source. The resulting images show a glowing, corona-like emanation around the subject - most famously around the human hand. Researchers have observed that this energetic corona changes with the subject's health, emotional state, and even their intentions - offering a tantalising glimpse into the reality of the human energy field.
Modern versions of this technology, including "GDV (Gas Discharge Visualisation)" cameras developed by Russian scientist Dr. Konstantin Korotkov, have taken aura imaging even further. These devices capture and analyse the biophoton emissions around the body and produce detailed, colorful images of the energy field that practitioners use as a diagnostic and monitoring tool. While mainstream science is still catching up with the full implications of this technology, its existence is a powerful reminder that the aura isn't just a spiritual concept - it's a measurable energetic reality. The science and the spirituality are, slowly but surely, shaking hands.
What is the human aura is always the first question, now you want to know how to interpret the aura?
Interpreting the aura is both an art and a science. A skilled aura reader doesn't just look at color - they read the "size" of the field (is it expansive or contracted?), the "clarity" (bright and clean, or murky and clouded?), the "symmetry" (balanced on both sides, or noticeably lopsided?), the "texture" (smooth and flowing, or jagged and disrupted?), and the "location" of any disturbances (which part of the body do they appear near?). Each of these factors adds a layer of meaning to the overall picture. It's like reading a very personal, very honest energetic biography.
For example, a bright, expansive aura that extends evenly around the body suggests a person who is healthy, open, and energetically vital. A contracted aura that hugs tightly to the body might indicate someone who feels unsafe, depleted, or emotionally withdrawn. Dark patches near specific areas of the body often correspond to physical or emotional issues in those regions. Holes or tears in the aura - which experienced practitioners can sense or see - may indicate areas where energy is leaking out, often linked to trauma, chronic stress, or energetic boundaries that need strengthening. Learning to interpret these signs takes time, but it's one of the most rewarding skills you can develop.
So how do you actually "balance and protect your aura" in everyday life? The great news is that you don't need to be a trained healer to start caring for your energy field right now. Simple, consistent practices make an enormous difference - and many of them you might already be doing without realising they have an energetic dimension. Here are some powerful starting points:
Protecting your aura is equally important - especially if you're a sensitive person who tends to absorb other people's energy like a sponge. (You know who you are.) A simple protection practice is to visualise a bright, golden or white bubble of light surrounding your entire body before you head into a busy or draining environment. Set the intention that this bubble allows only positive, loving energy to enter, and that anything else simply bounces off. It sounds simple - and it is - but intention is extraordinarily powerful in energy work. With practice, this kind of energetic hygiene becomes as natural and automatic as brushing your teeth.
Dis-eases are caused by the depletion, congestion or blockage of life force energy in your energy body.
These abnormalities can be seen and in a lot of instances they are distinguished by certain colors seen in the different layers of your energy field.
It is a good idea to protect and balance your aura from time to time this clears out any negative thought patterns and emotional blocks and also sets a shield of protection around yourself thereby assisting your body to retain much needed life force energy.
Having a clear understanding of the anatomy of your aura will enable you to take control of your life, your well-being in body, mind and spirit.
This is one of the things I teach all my students. I cannot even begin to explain how important it is for you to learn to do this for yourself.
