The Colors You Wear Influence Your Healing

The colors you wear influence your healing through color psychology and energy perception. Specific shades can subtly trigger physiological responses in your nervous system - such as slowing your heart rate with cool tones or boosting your energy with warm colors - thereby supporting your body and mind during the recovery process.

Color and Clothes

For most of us, our awareness of color begins and ends with the colors of our clothes (and for some of us, our make-up).

Color contributes a lot to the healing process and often what you choose to wear depicts how you feel.

When you feel down there is a tendency to wear dull and dowdy colors. It is at times like these that you can introduce colors that will lift your spirits and make you feel better; it will also help to change the situation you find yourself in.

The colors you wear can subconsciously influence your nervous system, mood, and stress levels. Color psychology dictates that specific hues trigger physiological responses, shaping how you feel and how others perceive you.

For instance, do not wear purple or violet if you feel depressed for it will make you more depressed. You would need green or pink to lift you and help you to feel better.

The Colors You Wear Influence Your Healing & Health

Blue is often associated with the pineal gland, this color is widely known for its calming and for soothing effect on the nervous system. Wearing blue can help reduce anxiety, lower stress levels and foster a sense of stability. Blue can lower heart rates and help ease physical pain.  It is highly recommended for relaxation or sleep.

  • Wear blue - if you need quiet and relaxation and want to unwind and are suffering from mental fatigue. Blue helps self-reliance, independence, and responsibility for others. Blue brings insight and wisdom, encourages decision-making, and helps you to link to your sense of intuition. Turquoise is good for the tense and nervous; it makes you feel fresh and young.
  • Avoid blue - if you are feeling depressed, since blue can make you feel worse. If you need to recharge, need energy, or are nervous, blue will not provide any support. If you are relying totally on your mental faculty to provide solution for your life, you may need to become more in touch with your emotions.

Red, stimulates the visual cortex and the sympathetic nervous system, it increases circulation and adds a boost of physical vitality if you are feeling fatigued. Wearing red can subconsciously increase alertness, boost physical energy, and raise your heart rate. It is great for evoking confidence but should be avoided in stressful or highly nervous states.

  • Wear red - when you are tired and lethargic or need to encourage physical exercise and a competitive spirit. Red will help with positive progress and success, and to put your plans into action. Wear red when you want to feel sensuous and vivacious.
  • Avoid red - when you are easily tired, or are suffering from bad flu, ME(myalgic encephalomyelitis), infectious mononucleosis, or chronic fatigue syndrome. Do not wear if you have a ruddy complexion, high blood pressure, or are quick to anger. Avoid also if you are nervous or tense.

Green is connected to feelings of nature and renewal. Wearing green tends to induce a sense of harmony, balance, and relaxation. It is an excellent neutral color for supporting emotional regulation. It is one of the best colors for soothing anxiety and promoting physical relaxation and balance.

  • Wear green - if you are hyperactive but find it difficult to make decisions or exercise clear judgment. Apple green promotes health, happiness, and innovation. Grass green gives you understanding and help to others, and encourages abundance in your life. Blue-green promotes optimism and faith in yourself and others.
  • Avoid green - when action is needed- green offers balance, but arrests movement. Green provides space and time when you do not want to make decisions, but can promote boredom, repression, and inactivity.

Yellow, stimulates energy and purifies the blood in color therapy. Wearing yellow can lift your spirits, promote self-confidence, it sharpens mental clarity and promotes joy, and optimism.

  • Wear yellow - when you wish to be alone so that you can become detached and impartial. Yellow promotes rational thought and reasoning, and can improve memory. It aids communication, sharing, and self-expression. Yellow is a good color for accessories when going for a job interview. Golden-yellow promotes sparkle and vitality and the ability to meet new challenges. Yellow is empowering and confidence-building.
  • Avoid yellow - if you are prone to criticism and suffer from a loss of anchorage and stability. Yellow can encourage egotism and is not good if you place too importance on material wealth. Yellow can cause irritability and a feeling of nausea.

Orange is known as an active, energetic hue that acts on the thyroid and glandular activity. It releases nervous tension and boosts vitality, making it ideal if you need a burst of enthusiasm.

  • Wear orange - when you are suffering from depression, or need to bring joy or lightness into your life. Orange relieves seriousness or thought and promotes laughter. It encourages independence of spirit and self-motivation, and will help release creativity and negative emotions related to a poor self-image. Orange is good if your adrenals are drained and you suffer from aches and pains especially in your neck, arms, and joints.
  • Avoid orange - when you feel confused, frustrated, or claustrophobic. Orange is not good if you feel sick or nauseous, because it will make you feel worse which proves the colors you wear influence your healing.

White symbolizes new beginnings, purity, and openness. It often helps create a feeling of being fresh and open-minded, allowing you to let go of past mental blocks.

  • Wear white - if you need a greater awareness and insight in your life- you may be indulging in being separate from reality. Wear white if you need to be open-minded, clear, and receptive to new ideas and plans without action. White gives you time to stop and think, to reflect without decision-making.
  • Avoid white - if you are feeling lonely, isolated, or cut off in any way, or you need to participate, act, or make decisions.

Our feelings about color are often deeply personal and rooted in our own experience or culture. For example, the color white is used in many Western countries to represent purity and innocence but is seen as a symbol of mourning in many Eastern countries.

Why the above Matters

Your eyes process color information, which then travels directly to the visual cortex and the limbic system (the emotional center of the brain). This process can trigger hormonal fluctuations, affecting levels of serotonin (the happiness chemical) and cortisol (the stress hormone). Understanding this allows you to intentionally select clothing that supports your current energy and wellness goals.

Feelings Inspired by the Colors You Wear

Keeping in mind that the colors you wear influence your healing - when choosing clothes try not to follow fashion just because it is the "in" color, rather for your own health and well being find the colors that suit you (these are the ones you feel happiest in and are the colors that you already have in your aura) and these colors make you feel good when you wear them. See Defining your Coloring.

If you are drawn to yellow, you more than likely feel good about yourself, for yellow is to do with identity and ego.

Quite a lot of successful businessmen and women are drawn to this color - they have strong personalities and make their presence felt. It is important to choose the correct color for the correct occasion.

Wearing Warm Colors will Earth and Ground You

Even though you might know that the colors you wear influence your healing and well being, there might be certain colors that you do not like, however these are more than likely the colors you need most and it will more than likely, over a period of time, change your attitudes and feelings.

You might not like green but take into account that green has many different shades and tints, and it is one of the few rays where the darker shades can give you more energy in the way of strength.

However, when your mind is overactive, I suggest that you get yourself a scarf with apple green in it, use silk or cotton for it must be natural fiber to be most effective. Place this scarf on the back of your chair and then put your head back; you will find it soothing and calming.

In all cases it is advisable to wear natural fibers because they allow the body to breathe. This not only refers to the exchange of air, but also to the exchange of the finer color energies in and out of the body.

As far as your make-up or lack thereof is concerned, certain cosmetic psychologists claim that a woman can feel better about herself by adding particular colors to her face, and so begin a cycle of well being.

Using cosmetic colors can appear to alter the dimensions of your face by changing the color of your hair, skin, lips and eye make-up.

Real confidence, of course, springs from within and a naturally glowing face is the result of good health and diet, as well as happiness and well being - the inner harmony on which color practitioners work.
