Colour
What is It?
The world is full of light
and colour and our eyes translate the energy of light into signals
- nervous impulses - that the brain then interprets as "seeing".
This visible light is part of a wider spectrum of energy that surrounds us, and most of this comes from the sun.
Colour is light. Light is split into different wavelengths vibrating at different speeds and different frequencies.
Objects that ABSORB all wavelengths and DO NOT reflect any of these wavelengths, is black.
Objects that REFLECT all wavelengths therefore reflecting everything, is white.
It is between black and white that COLOUR lies.
Visible light is made of seven wavelength groups. These are the colours you see in a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet - the Mr. ROY G. BIV you might have been introduced to in elementary school science.
The long wavelengths are the reddish ones. The greenish are the mid-size wavelengths and the short wavelengths are the bluish colours. Therefore colours are made of wavelengths of energy that, to us, appear as colour because of the potential and capabilities of an object to either absorb or reflect the energy. This basic principle is how we experience it.
One of the ways we heal with colour, is that the eyes convert light into energy, which travels through our nervous system, and affects all bodily functions. Studies have shown that when colour is introduced to the human system it causes cellular and hormonal changes. This can bring the cells into synchronization or balance.
Colour therapy eyewear is one method of using this system. To use an example, as the colour enters the eye it is directed to the hypothalamus gland. It then goes to the pineal gland, which directs it to the pituitary gland. The pituitary governs and regulates hormone production. The brain processes this information, which causes the cellular and hormonal changes to occur.
The chemistry of colour involves pigments and combinations.
Primary Colours
These are the three key colours. They cannot be made from any other colour and the colours are red, blue and yellow.

Secondary Colours
These are formed by mixing equal parts of any two primary colours as follows:

Tertiary Colours
These are formed by mixing a primary colour with a secondary on a ratio of 2 to 1.

Complementary Colours
These are those which, when mixed together in the same proportion produces grey and are opposite one another e.g. as follows:
- Red - Green
- Violet - Yellow
- Blue - Orange

| Warm Colours | Cool Colours |
|---|---|
| Red | Green |
| Orange | Blue |
| Yellow | Violet |
